Economy of the Sea is the theme of the next 2020 Challenges workshop

Next Wednesday, July 1, the workshop “a fiber sea” will take place. As part of the 2020 Challenges cycle of workshops, the event will take place on the premises of the University of Minho, in Guimarães, and is organized in partnership with Oceanos XXI.

Portugal has the particularity of having an extensive Exclusive Economic Zone, which allows it access to a vast number of resources with countless potentialities. For this reason, this workshop aims to address the possibilities of applying fiber-based materials, technologies and products to various activities of the sea economy.

The event will have four panels of work: the first is dedicated to the exploration of the sea economy, opportunities and future of innovation for this sector; what follows will address the scientific and technological challenges in the Portuguese sea sector; the last morning panel has Security as its theme, where applications in clothing, equipment, among others will be discussed. The ‘Blue Energy’ panel opens in the afternoon, and covers the potential of marine energy, from composites, through ropes and even to structures based on wave energy. The last panel of the day is dedicated to Nautical and aims to address not only the construction and repair of equipment but also equipment for other water sports, such as surfboards.
