Fibrenamics Green is a project developed by the International Platform Fibrenamics of UMinho in partnership with the CVR – Center for the Valorisation of Waste. The main mission is the recovery of waste by creating value for the product, through incorporation by design, product engineering and creativity.

This project aims to launch innovative technologies and products based on waste, which has been developed over the last years by the University. At the same time, Fibrenamics Green will provide all the conditions to introduce the products developed in the market, with the aim of promoting, valuing and integrating the stakeholders in the innovation process based on waste.

Professor Raul Fangueiro pointed out that “the main message of the platform is the idea of creating innovative products based on waste, but most of all, to create a community with the value chains that operate around this idea of innovation based on waste”. In his presentation he also highlighted the role of Fibrenamics Green in the practical valorization of waste, so “waste is not only the garbage we put in or hide inside something, but it is the basic element of an innovative product and that is the differentiator element of this product “.

Nelma Teixeira, from IKEA Industry, also attended the Innovation Open-Day with the lecture “Corporate Sustainability”. It was introduced the IKEA sustainability plan and the involvement with the community that the organization has been developing in the region of Paços de Ferreira. In her speech, Nelma Teixeira highlighted the role of socio-ecological responsibility, in which the sustainable reuse of waste is also included, demonstrating some examples of good practices in IKEA Industry.

Jorge Araújo, Executive Director of CVR, highlighted the project contribution as a technological interface that “has been applying research in some industrial sectors and for certain types of waste” since the CVR has a lot of knowledge about waste, production, quantities and locations, in result of the work that the Center has been developing with waste for almost 15 years. In this way, Jorge Araújo acknowledges that Fibrenamics Green contributes to the constitution of “a space not only for the presentation of projects, but also to share knowledge and debate of many ideas, focus on innumerous challenges and opportunities that arise with special effort on sustainable waste management” through valuation by design.

The Municipal Council of Guimarães was also represented in the initiative by the words of Vice President Amadeu Portilha, who acclaimed the project, highlighting the technical-scientific quality and opportunities that the recovery of waste provides to the region.

The second part of the event was a moment of technological networking between the various entities, where the participants could interact directly and experiment some of the demonstrations of Fibrenamics Green’s materials, technologies and products. So, the Innovation Open-Day launched officially the project, as a starting point for the establishment of new partnerships with companies from various industrial sectors.

Fibrenamics Green is a part-financed project by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the NORTE 2020 Regional Operational Program for the North 2014-2020 with a total eligible cost of 552.856,83€, EU financial support of 469.928,31€ and self-financing of 82.928,52€.
