The climate changes are a problem of everyone’s responsibility – not only society, but also industries and universities, as such, it is urgent to find solutions to the environmental problems that are currently undergoing. It is thus that Fibrenamics Green project was born, with the purpose of presenting a sustainable response to the industrial wastes problem.

The Fibrenamics Green project – Platform for the development of innovative products based on wastes was presented by Carlos Almeida, who also talked about the impact of waste in the national and global economy, and the urgency to incorporate the materials into a circular economy model, where waste is returned to the production cycle through reuse, recovery and recycling. In his speech, it was also highlighted the importance of product design and engineering as activators of the development of innovative products based on waste.

In this event, it was also presented the business sustainability case of SPAL Porcelanas, a company with more than 50 years that promotes design, innovation and quality as an integral part of corporate culture. Ana Figueiredo presented some of the organization’s sustainable good practices, such as the use of natural resources, waste recycling and energy efficiency plans.
Over time, SPAL Porcelanas has been communicating and implementing the 3R’s policy (reduce, reuse, recycle) and bet more and more on eco-design. One of the greatest examples is the Remade in Portugal line, a project originated in 2007 that seeks to encourage the creation and development of products whose composition comprises a minimum percentage of 50% of material from recycling processes.

The waste valorisation to generate new products, new businesses and the reinforcement of business credibility was the theme of Fernando Merino’s speech from ERT Têxtil Portugal, a company specialized in the production of technical textiles.
With special emphasis on sustainability as a competitive advantage of organizations in corporate strategies, business models and value chains, innovation is assumed to be the vehicle of value creation and financial return for organizations, whether for the development and implementation of new products, services, processes or business models.

The workshop ‘Fibrenamics Green: Innovation with Wastes – Design and Product Engineering’ also counted on the participation of Paulo Bago de Uva. The professor at the University of Aveiro presented examples of innovative products that applied the principles of eco-design and sustainability. A demonstration of trends for the creative industries in the national and international panorama.

The event ended with a moment of corporate networking during the visit to the exhibitions “[D]IN Design na Inovação Industrial” by ERT Têxtil Portugal and the exhibitions “Fibrenamics Green – From Waste to Product” with the demonstration of some of the materials, technologies and products developed under the project. A moment of interaction, which had an extensive sharing of experiences.
