“PRADEX was a revolution”

“PRADEX was a revolution”

The 5th session of Gatherings Fibrenamics - innovative products with fiber, brought together, last Friday, at the FNAC cafe in BragaParque, some of those responsible for the development of PRADEX, a compression sleeve used in the treatment of lymphedema. The product, which is already on the market, was developed by Barcelcom, in technological partnership with Fibrenamics / UMinho, and clinical partnership with the Breast Center of Hospital de São João (HSJ).

Juliana Cruz, UMinho researcher, Gaspar Sousa Coutinho and Manuela Pereira, from Barcelcom, and Fernando Osório, from HSJ's Breast Center, explained the product's development, from the idea to the entry into the market, as well as the challenges for the future. Juliana Cruz explained that the mangoes that already existed on the market had several limitations, both in terms of thermophysiology and in terms of aesthetics and comfort, and that, as in all the projects she develops, Fibrenamics / UMinho is always concerned with understanding what is what the market needs. The researcher was satisfied because, “in the end, we got a product validated by the people” who use it, and that this “is very important”. An opinion corroborated by Fernando Osório, who even said that “PRADEX was a revolution”, because “the vast majority of mangoes that are on the market are very uncomfortable”. On the part of the company responsible for the development of the product, both speakers showed their concern with the issue of the price of the product for the final consumer, because, they explained, the PRADEX mango was developed so that people who suffer from these complications can have “a life more normal ”. In fact, PRADEX costs about 6 times less than its competitors, but, as identified by Gaspar Sousa Coutinho, the challenges to internationalization are many, and the support is few. Even so, all those involved were confident with the success of the product, who admit that they are working to improve, namely in terms of aesthetics.

At the end of the meeting, those present could interact with the speakers, and even try the product, confirming the potential discussed in the session.
