Fibrenamics organized, during the first two weekends of this month, the first advanced training course in 2016. Under the theme “Technical and Functional Textiles: technologies, innovations and opportunities”, this initiative took place on the campus of Azurém at UMinho , in Guimarães and had 17 participants.

In order for participants to obtain and / or deepen advanced skills in the area of technical and functional textiles, through the acquisition of knowledge about functional fibers and textile structures, through techniques of functionalization, characterization, case studies of real application in the most several areas, culminating in the analysis of trends and market opportunities, the balance of the event was very positive. According to Bruno Pereira, responsible for training, this course “met our expectations, having partly exceeded what we had predicted, since this is the first action of the 2016 plan and we are looking forward to the reflection of the new design and implementation new methodologies in training ”.

The training was divided into three modules, the first two with a more technical-scientific aspect were taught by Andrea Zille, a researcher at the University of Minho, and the last one more focused on market trends and opportunities was in charge of Fernando Merino, Director of Innovation by ERT Têxtil Portugal SA.

In Andrea Zille's view, “the trainees were very interested and motivated. They asked a lot of questions and, in the laboratory, we had interesting conversations, taking into account that some trainees had extensive experience in conventional fibers. ” In addition, from the researcher's perspective, this type of activity is very important “to shorten the historical distances between university and industry. There is clearly an interest on both sides to find common ground that can provide the tools to collaborate on joint projects ”.

The participants were also not indifferent to this formation. For Mariana Pires, chemical engineer, this training allowed “to broaden my knowledge in the area of functional fibers. In addition to the knowledge acquired, I found that people were very curious to know which companies were present, how their companies worked, that is, it was also an opportunity for companies to establish some contact with each other. This type of training can help companies to improve and modify their processes / products, especially when implementing new materials and processes and how to proceed”.

Continuing with a strategy where, according to Bruno Pereira, “the intention is to highlight the symbiosis between knowledge between companies and the market”, innovation will be a fundamental theme in the next formation of Fibrenamics, in which the intention is to involve themes such as product development, design, fashion, and the scientific areas of materials and textile sciences and technologies. “Design of innovative products” will be the theme of this training that will take place next March, in S. João da Madeira.
