“Fibers will play a key role in the sports revolution”

These were the words of Raul Fangueiro yesterday afternoon at the University of Minho (UM), in Guimarães, within the scope of the workshop “From Knowledge to the Market - Textile” organized by the Fibrenamics platform. In addition to the platform coordinator, Carlos Carvalhal was also optimistic about technological applications based on fiber, particularly in the field of injury prevention and recovery.

The coach of Al Ahli confessed that he was unaware of the applicability regarding recovery from injuries, but considered it an "excellent novelty". Cruciate ligament ruptures are frequent injuries in football, “extremely serious”, and although football is “a conservative sport”, the Portuguese coach said he was sure he has the doors open to all the technology that helps “to prepare better an athlete and a team ”. Raul Fangueiro, professor and researcher at UM, explained that there are already several works that are being done in the development of fibrous elements and fiber-based products that function as an implantable element inside the human body, making the function of a natural ligament .

In addition to this, there are other areas in which Carlos Carvalhal and Raul Fangueiro considered fundamental in innovation in sport. The comfort of the pieces; smart clothing that serves, for example, to monitor the athlete's vital signs; and injury prevention are three segments “where UM has invested a lot”, concluded the Portuguese coach
