Fibrenamics from UMinho recognized by the European Commission

The European Commission selected the Fibrenamics International Platform at the University of Minho as a case study, as it considers it to be an example of good practice in promoting a cooperative relationship between the university and the business community.

All the activities and work that Fibrenamics has carried out with regard to the transfer of knowledge and technology to the business environment allowed the European Commission, within the scope of the study that it has been carrying out on the existing cooperation work between the institutions of higher education and companies, to select it as a model to be followed at European level.

Fibrenamics develops fundamental research at the highest level in the fiber area every day, works directly with companies at national and international level in the development of innovative products, and takes on the organization of initiatives that promote the discussion of emerging themes and the networking between the scientific and business environment. In addition, the development and involvement of society is one of the focal points for Fibrenamics, which is concerned on a daily basis with simple and complete disclosure of the most innovative features that have been created and what repercussions these developments may bring to the society.

This study aimed, in this way, to obtain a deeper, more comprehensive and updated understanding of the state of cooperation between universities and companies in Europe, from the perspective of higher education institutions and the business sector, through the assessment of the state of operation this cooperation in different countries, by defining the main factors and barriers for different stakeholders and investigating the type of measures / initiatives that exist at regional / national level to support the development of cooperation between universities and companies.

University-Business cooperation is considered to be the engine for knowledge-based societies and economies and is therefore especially necessary in the European context, which is threatened by increased global competition, with ongoing economic issues and high levels of unemployment.

Fibrenamics, created in 2011 at the University of Minho, is thus an excellent example of promoting and fostering economic growth, innovation and knowledge at European level.
