Hospital Medicine closes Workshop “Fibrous Materials in Health”

The fibrous materials in health workshop closed with the panel on hospital medicine. The session, moderated by Claúdia Viana, had as speakers António Lúcio Baptista from Iberia Advanced Healthcare, Judite Neves from Infarmed, Manuel Monteiro from São Lucas Private Hospital, Orlando Cunha from Fapomed, Tiago Adrega from Sumthink and Catarina Guise from Fibrenamics.

Starting this session, António Lúcio Baptista started by saying that generally "when talking about health, we talk about the provision of health care, which is only a small portion". This proposition set the tone for the rest of the conversation, which focused on the issue of innovation being an essential asset for users. However, the idea transpired that, according to António Lúcio Baptista, “when launching products there is still more aggressiveness in terms of communication”, mainly through the media.

Joining this discussion, Judite Neves showed a little of the work that Infarmed has been doing as a regulator in the launch of new medical devices, making the appeal that “it is essential that the idea development teams involve people who know the regulation ”So that products can be approved and recognized without much difficulty, thus fulfilling all necessary requirements. In this context, the director of Infarmed made known to all the participants the steps that must be taken in the development of the products, calling attention to the European standards that must be respected. Judite Neves also recalled that the role of Infarmed is available to answer questions.

For his part, Orlando Cunha from Fapomed disclosed his company's work, stressing a key idea: “Progress is only made in medical devices if we have feedback from the medical community”.

Manuel Monteiro based his conversation on the presentation of Hospital de São Lucas, the first Private Hospital in the Azores, ensuring that the bet that is being made is very strong in the quality of the spaces. In addition, Manuel Monteiro assured that this is a “differentiating” project, as it is implying the “adoption of some innovative equipment” never used in Europe.

Following the conversation, Catarina Guise spoke a little about the Fibrenamics projects that are being developed in this area, making a special mention of stents - an implantable material with great potential. António Lúcio Baptista strongly supported the statement made by the Fibrenamics researcher and added that, since we are moving from curative health to preventive health, “smart stents will be very important in the future because they allow them to be sensed, giving preventive information ”.

At the end of this session, Tiago Adraga made known what the Sumthink project consists of and, more than that, highlighted a very important issue for the launch of new innovation projects: “the financial means are always a great barrier to development”. In addition, the young cardiologist insisted on an idea that was debated during the various sessions of the workshop, that the dialogue between researchers and clinicians should be encouraged.

Closing this session, António Lúcio Baptista congratulated the University of Minho and Fibrenamics in relation to the technological evolution that these entities have provided, saying with satisfaction that “the world of fibers and nanofibers is attractive”.
